Does your fired project have a wonky edge? Does your bowl wobble? Our lap grinder can help you. It uses ever finer grits to make your project smoother and more finished. In this training workshop, you will learn safety tips; how to set up the lap grinder; how to change wheels and clean them; and how to clean up the grinder at the end.

Please bring 1-3 fired projects to work on.

The lap grinder can be messy, especially the first time. Wear old clothes or an apron; and old closed toe shoes. I recommend you remove your rings, bracelets or watches; and tie back long hair.

    INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Intermediate: Able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

Fossil Vitra is the process of layering powdered frit on a dried leaf, fern or flower, and firing until the organic matter burns away and a frit impression is left on the glass.  It is helpful if you have had experience using powdered frit.

On a 9x12 tile, you will make one 6x6 piece.  Optional: you may also fit one 4x6 or 4x8 project on the same tile.

In preparation, choose a leaf, fern or flower; flatten it and dry it between paper towels for at least a week before the workshop.  The flatter the leaf, the easier it will be for the frit to stay in place.

Choose your base glass and frit colors in contrasting colors for greatest effect.

You Must wear a P100 mask--no substitutes!  You may bring your own powdered frit, or you may use the Instructors' frit for a $2 charge.  In addition, please bring:

    ·         white or off-white glass, 6x6 and 4x8 (optional)

    ·         clear glass the same size

    ·         9x12 tile and papyros to cover the tile

    ·         Dried flat ferns, leaves, or flowers

    ·         Powdered frit, if you have it; or use the instructors for $2 cash.

    ·         Tweezers, paint brush, plastic spoons

    *            Frit tools, if you have them: red frit sifters, funnel, vacuum

    ·         Aerosol hair spray (unscented)

On Day One, you will create your design and fuse it.  On Day Two, you will apply clear powder to the fired piece, cap it with clear glass and full fuse. You will pay for the first firing on the 9x12 tile, after Day 1. The second firing will be based on the size of your project(s), paid separately after Day 2. A third firing to slump is optional.

General supplies to bring to class:

    * Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type mats work best)

    * Glues: Elmer’s (clear or white), Needle nosed bottle with non-aerosol hairspray

    * Writing Tools: Black Sharpies (fine and regular), Pen & Pencil

Join us in the classroom to design four lantern panels for an 11 inch white lantern (see pictures - mine are black lanterns - yours will be white). We will provide each member with the lantern at a cost of $16 payable to the instructors at the beginning of the workshop. (Please bring the exact amount.)

In this workshop you will be removing the original (non-fusible) glass from your lantern first. Then you will be using those four panels as your templates to mark on a 12”x12” sheet of clear COE 96 glass, and then we will be using the Beetle Bits or Morton cutting systems to cut your panels. The rest of the workshop time will be devoted to creating designs for each panel. Your designs can follow a theme: holiday, seasonal, floral, abstract, etc. if you’d like. You can get some great ideas from Pinterest. The instructors will have limited embellishment materials available for a small fee ($1-$2).

YOU MUST BRING THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES FOR THIS WORKSHOP:

       * one 12”x12” sheet of clear COE 96 glass for the panels

       * embellishment materials to use for your designs (scrap glass, dots, stringers, frit, etc.)

       * a flat-head screw driver to remove the original lantern glass panels

       * and the general supplies listed below

General supplies to bring to class:

    * Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type mats work best)

    * Glues: Elmer’s (clear or white), Needle nosed bottle with non-aerosol hairspray

    * Writing Tools: Black Sharpies (fine and regular), Pen & Pencil

    * Other helpful items:Tweezers, Toothpicks, A carrying box for projects

    * Safety Items: P-100 Mask, Safety glasses, Closed-toe shoes, Band-aids

    INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED LEVELS

Intermediate:  Able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment.  Fusers are learning about special firing programs. Advanced:  Able to design and create complex projects independently; familiar with specialized tools and supplies. Fusers are familiar with all firing programs. Join us in the classroom to make a colorful 6” pinwheel (see pictures) that can be used as a sun catcher.

This project is constructed by creating two layers of curved “swoop” shapes. The “swoops” will be cut from 3” wide strips of colored glass. Each layer uses 13 “swoops”. The instructors will have swivel hangers available to buy for $1.25. I really like the look of using all transparent, but you can use both transparent and/or opalescent.

See the chart below for help deciding how much glass you need depending on your design:

    * If using one color - you’ll need to bring two 12”x3” strips of that color & one 4”x3” strip of that color.

    * If using two colors - you’ll need to bring one 12”x3” strip & one 4”x3” strip of the 1st color.  you’ll need to bring one 12”x3” strip & one 4”x3” strip,of the 2nd color.

    * If using three colors - you’ll need to bring one 12”x3” strip of each color.

    * If using the rainbow colors - you’ll need 4 “swoops” of five of the colors & 6 “swoops” of one color. (I would suggest       bringing one 7”x3” strip of each color.) You’ll also need to bring: a thin black Sharpie,  a 9”x12” tile to build your project on, kiln paper cut to 8”x8”, a container to wash your “swoops” in, and a lint-free towel, plus the things listed below.

General supplies to bring to class:

    * Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type mats work best)

    * Glues: Elmer’s (clear or white), Needle nosed bottle with non-aerosol hairspray * Writing Tools: Black Sharpies (fine and regular), Pen & Pencil

    * Other helpful items:Tweezers, Toothpicks, A carrying box for projects * Safety Items: P-100 Mask, Safety glasses, Closed-toe shoes, Band-aids

    * Bring a firing ticket - firing cost will be $3.50 - contour fuse.

Workshop level: Intermediate: Must already know how to do copper foil method of stain glass.

In this class you will learn how to make a six-sided heart spinner.  The pattern will be available.  You will need to bring all of your own glass, supplies, and tools. You will make six individual panels that will then be connected into a spinner. We will probably not complete the spinner in these two classes, but we will schedule more days for later.

If you have a spinner jig, please bring it to class to make putting your heart together easier. You will probably need one sheet of red, one sheet of pink, and half sheet of white. If you choose to use other colors plan accordingly. Remember, you are making six individual panels. Each panel is approximately 5” x 5” times the six panels so you will need to plan your glass for this amount.

General supplies to bring to class:

    • Must have a board and the metal side strips to hold the pattern.
    • Toyo cutter
    • Writing Tools: Black and silver Sharpie
    • Running pliers
    • Grozers
    • Work board and push pins

    INTERMEDIATE LEVEL IN FRIT ROOM

Must be able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

This workshop will explore the technique of sgragitto which is a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of contrasting color. It is typically used in plaster or pottery but we will be adopting it to glass.

This class will focus more on experimenting with the technique. You may wish to complete a final piece such as an appetizer plate or serving dish or bowl.  The choice is yours.

For this class you will need to bring:

Glassine paint in a variety of colors, or purchase from the instructors for a small fee.

Several pieces of approximately 4x4 float, clear, opal and translucent glass for experimenting - make sure to mark which are float and which are COE 96.

6x6 Clear glass to use as a base or a cap on your project.

6x6 Opal or translucent glass of the color that will be revealed after you create your design. White Opal works well as a base but you may want a different color based on the colors of paints that you choose.

Sponges that are cut up into small squares.

A hairdryer if you have one (but we can share).

    Tin Foil

Scratching implements of varying thicknesses such as toothpicks, stainless dental picks, paintbrush ends, cuticle pushers, popsicle sticks, paper clips, etc.

You will need a P-100 mask to wear during the scratching portion or the technique.

General supplies to bring: Cutting tools; Toyo cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type work best), Elmers Glue, Needle-nozed non aerosol hairspray. Writing tools, Sharpies, Pen & Pencil, Tweezers, Band-aids, Toothpicks, P-100 Mask, Safety Glasses, Closed-toe shoes and a carry box for your project. Bring Firing ticket.

This is the Volunteer Signup to sort SWAG orders for this month - First Friday of the month.   This is only being sent to the group of people who have expressed interest in assisting.  We are limiting signups to avoid having too many people resulting in a backup in the process.

The start time is fluid, we get a text from SWAG when they are about 20-30 minutes away.  Expect that time to be somewhere between 11 and 2.  We aim to be completed with the sorting of the order by 3pm when the studio closes.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:

    NEW MEMBERS ONLY WORKSHOP:

(You are considered a new member for 6 months after joining the club.)

In this workshop you will be designing a “carnival” plate (see picture).

You can choose the size you want to make - either a 6”x6” or a 12”x6”. (One of the pictures is 12”x6”. The other shown is round, but gives you another design idea.) You will be firing your project twice. If making a 6”x6” plate, the total cost will be $3.00. If you decide to make a 12”x6” platter, the total cost will be $6.00. Please bring the correct change.

You must also bring the following supplies to this workshop:

    * either a 6”x6” sheet OR a 12”x6” sheet of opaque COE 96 glass that will act as your background base color on which to build the “carnival squares” (your choice of color)

    * opaque scrap colors to use to make the “carnival squares”

The instructors will also bring a variety of scrap colors of opaque glass to use for those who need them. The squares are usually two to three colors high - the bottom layer of squares are about 1”, the 2nd layer about 1/2”, and if you add a 3rd layer - about 1/4”. Think ahead about what base color you’ll use and what combination of colors you want for your “carnival squares”. Feel free to precut your background base color and your squares in advance.

IMPORTANT - If you need to order glass for this, please have your order in to SW Art Glass by 5:30 Friday, January 30th. You can also buy glass at Tucson Stained Glass on Grant Ave. in Tucson. Any questions or problems - call Judy at 763-516-1769.

    INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Must be able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance & trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

This will be a repeat of the December class.
We will be creating a fused starburst bowl or planter.

You will need 2 sheets of 12x12” clear glass and scrap strips of whatever colour you want your accent pieces to be.
Check your coloured pieces on their edge. If they look dark or clear on edge, they will not show up well in your bowl. You want the colours to be vibrant.
You will need to cut 1 1/2 sheets of your clear glass into 3/4" strips ahead of class. The strips do not have to be precise.
Please bring liquid hairspray -you will be using it as a spray so you will need a pump bottle of hairspray.
    You will need nippers.
You will build your project on top of firing paper that will be provided at the class.
If you have a lazy susan - bring it with you. It's not necessary but does make it easier.
We are suggesting slumping on to mold RO34 which is a 12” circle, but RO24 and RO27 which are slightly smaller would also work. You will need to decide before class which one you will be using.

General supplies to bring to class:
    * Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type mats work best)

Whether you are a new member or a member who is a bit rusty and needs a refresher course, please join us for this training to learn all about the ring saw. We will discuss the various blades that are available and when and how to use them.

You will learn to cut intricate patterns in glass for your art projects. We will discuss the difference between our various blades; regular, slim, diachroic, mega, and speed blades, as well as when and how to use them.

(They may not all be in operation at the time of your training, but we will discuss and answer questions about the various ones.)

This training will also include step-by-step instruction on how to clean the machines after you have used them.

You may bring a project to practice your cutting. We will provide scrap glass and patterns for you to practice on.

This equipment training does not count toward the one-workshop-per-month.

For further assistance or questions, please contact the instructor(s).

Beginners: First time users! Learn how to safely cut thicker pieces of glass art such as “Pattern Bars” and “Scrap Boxes” (If you don’t know what these are, please ask a fellow member to let you take a look). Once you have created a pattern bar, scrap box, or other FUSED project that is thicker than 6mm (> 2 layers of glass), sign up for this training and BRING YOUR PROJECT with you to the training. No samples will be available.

Intermediate/Advanced: If you have attended this training before and you have created more items that need cutting, please feel free to sign up for a time slot.

    Workshop location: Ramada

Time Slot scheduling: Please schedule yourself in one of the 15-minute sessions.

Learn to cut pattern bars (7 layers thick, fused glass bar) or scrap boxes (1/2” fused glass bar). **PLEASE DO NOT BRING UNFUSED SINGLE SHEETS OF GLASS OR FUSED GLASS THAT IS ONLY 2 LAYERS THICK.

This class is considered both an “equipment training” class and an “equipment access” opportunity. Beginners will learn how to safely use the tile saw, discuss basic set up and clean up as well as what material is appropriate for its use.

Please bring a magic marker for measuring and Vaseline to cover the lines before cutting.

This equipment training does not count toward the one-workshop-per-month.
