INTERMEDIATE LEVEL IN FRIT ROOM

Must be able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

This workshop will explore the technique of sgragitto which is a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of contrasting color. It is typically used in plaster or pottery but we will be adopting it to glass.

This class will focus more on experimenting with the technique. You may wish to complete a final piece such as an appetizer plate or serving dish or bowl.  The choice is yours.

For this class you will need to bring:

Glassine paint in a variety of colors, or purchase from the instructors for a small fee.

Several pieces of approximately 4x4 float, clear, opal and translucent glass for experimenting - make sure to mark which are float and which are COE 96.

6x6 Clear glass to use as a base or a cap on your project.

6x6 Opal or translucent glass of the color that will be revealed after you create your design. White Opal works well as a base but you may want a different color based on the colors of paints that you choose.

Sponges that are cut up into small squares.

A hairdryer if you have one (but we can share).

Tin Foil

Scratching implements of varying thicknesses such as toothpicks, stainless dental picks, paintbrush ends, cuticle pushers, popsicle sticks, paper clips, etc.

You will need a P-100 mask to wear during the scratching portion or the technique.

General supplies to bring: Cutting tools; Toyo cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type work best), Elmers Glue, Needle-nozed non aerosol hairspray. Writing tools, Sharpies, Pen & Pencil, Tweezers, Band-aids, Toothpicks, P-100 Mask, Safety Glasses, Closed-toe shoes and a carry box for your project. Bring Firing ticket.
