Intermediate and above Workshop

Able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

Day one:

Please bring at least one piece of 3mm clear at least 15" long & several smaller pieces that are opaque Southwest colors (turquoise, clay reds, burnt oranges, neutrals, greens, golds, etc). The picture shows a piece that is 2" wide (but the width is up to you). Also bring stringers, dots, noodles, glass paints, etc for fired embellishments. This finished piece can be hung (supplies will be included in workshop) or you can place it in a stand that you may already have.

Day two:

We will assemble the fired totem with backing & embellishments. Bring embellishments if you have them, or will be provided by instructors. Examples of embellishments are: feathers, leathers, beads, arrow heads, etc. Also bring E 6000 glue or epoxy if you plan to hang your piece.

Wissmach comes 10"x16" and is $10.50

Oceanside comes 12"x 24" and is $24.50

Students will create a glass design on mosaic mesh to be used later in a project of the student's choice (flowerpots, roof tiles, etc.) . This is a technique class to learn an "indirect method" of creating glass mosaic designs on mesh. We will be using ONLY mesh as a base to design on. We will NOT be grouting the design in this class. A selection of designs will be provided and a list shared with students in advance of the class.

General supplies to bring to class:

Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type mats work best)
Glues: Weldbond only--no Elmer's

CL Watercolor Effect on Papyros, Friday, 7/31, 10-1 (07/31/2026)

ALL LEVEL WORKSHOP:

Beginner: Learning how to cut basic shapes and follow a line; familiar with basic tools and supplies. Fusers understand full, contour, tack, slump firing programs.

You will need:

Two pieces of 6" x 4" COE 96 clear glass (you can use one opaque piece for the back if you prefer)

A 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" piece of Papyros paper (Papyros is available for purchase at the Club Store)

Glassline paints in your chosen colors (Instructors will share their colors for a fee of $2, but if there are particular colors you want, please bring them)

Stencil that fits on Papyros - no bigger than 5" x 3" (Instructors will have some to share)

small plastic container for water

3 plastic lids large enough for a paint palette (sour cream lids work well)

1" wide soft paintbrush (does not need to be expensive)

3+ sponge pouncers/daubers

small round paintbrush or toothpick for touchups

painter's tape

hair dryer

Writing tools: black and silver Sharpies (fine and regular), pen, pencil

Other helpful items: tweezers, toothpicks, a carrying box for projects

Firing ticket(s)

Important Information

You MUST use Papyros paper for this project; thin fire will not hold up to the watercolor painting.

You MUST use Glassline paint; other types will not work.

The Papyros MUST be cut 1/4" - 3/8" smaller than your pieces of glass. The glass needs to seal to itself, and that won't happen if the paper interferes.

You MUST use shims between your layers of glass. Shims are pieces of clear, fine frit (not round in shape) that allow the paper's gases to escape before the layers of glass melt, fusing together. If the gas can't escape, the paper will burn and cause a giant crater in the center - hence, a ruined project and upset kiln operators.

Whether you are a new member or a member who is a bit rusty and needs a refresher course, please join us for this training to learn all about the ring saw. We will discuss the various blades that are available and when and how to use them.

You will learn to cut intricate patterns in glass for your art projects. We will discuss the difference between our various blades; regular, slim, diachroic, mega, and speed blades, as well as when and how to use them.

(They may not all be in operation at the time of your training, but we will discuss and answer questions about the various ones.)

This training will also include step-by-step instruction on how to clean the machines after you have used them.

You may bring a project to practice your cutting. We will provide scrap glass and patterns for you to practice on.

This equipment training does not count toward the one-workshop-per-month.

Workshop Location: - Classroom and Frit Room

This will be a two day mosaic Workshop. We will take ceramic plates and decorate them with glass and other embellishment items which can then be hung up in your kitchen. Templates are provided so that items can also be constructed from heavy‑ duty plastic, allowing them to serve as an additional accent placed on top of your decorative plates. We will then used colored grout to complete the look of your piece.

If you wish to use specific colors of glass we may not have, please bring those with you along with any additional embellishments.

Plates were donated and can be used free of charge or you can bring your own to decorate.

$10.00 due to instructor to pay for club supplies (club glass).

$3.00 due to instructor to pay for assorted decorating elements, templates, grout and colorant.

The start time is fluid, we get a text from SWAG when they are about 20-30 minutes away. Expect that time to be somewhere between 11 and 2. We aim to be completed with the sorting of the order by 3pm when the studio closes.

WORKSHOP LEVELS

Beginners: First time users! Learn how to safely cut thicker pieces of glass art such as “Pattern Bars” and “Scrap Boxes” (If you don’t know what these are, please ask a fellow member to let you take a look). Once you have created a pattern bar, scrap box, or other FUSED project that is thicker than 6mm (> 2 layers of glass), sign up for this training and BRING YOUR PROJECT with you to the training. No samples will be available.

Intermediate/Advanced: If you have attended this training before and you have created more items that need cutting, please feel free to sign up for a time slot.

Workshop location: Ramada

Time Slot scheduling: Please schedule yourself in one of the 15-minute sessions.

Learn to cut pattern bars (7 layers thick, fused glass bar) or scrap boxes (1/2” fused glass bar). **PLEASE DO NOT BRING UNFUSED SINGLE SHEETS OF GLASS OR FUSED GLASS THAT IS ONLY 2 LAYERS THICK.

This class is considered both an “equipment training” class and an “equipment access” opportunity. Beginners will learn how to safely use the tile saw, discuss basic set up and clean up as well as what material is appropriate for its use.

Please bring a magic marker for measuring and Vaseline to cover the lines before cutting.

This equipment training does not count toward the one-workshop-per-month.

Join us in this workshop to learn how to design and slump a soap dish/sponge dish. This dish will measure 6"x4" and will have a clear glass base and a top sheet of 6"x4" glass that can be opaque or transparent. You will have a chance to use embellishments (scrap glass, dots, stringers, etc.) to create a design on your dish. The instructors will have some embellishment materials for those who need them. There will be two firings - the initial firing, and the 2nd firing using a slump mold. Please bring $2.00 ($1.00 each) to pay for these two firings.

YOU MUST BRING THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIES TO THIS WORKSHOP:

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Does your fired project have a wonky edge? Does your bowl wobble? Our lap grinder can help you. It uses ever finer grits to make your project smoother and more finished. In this training workshop, you will learn safety tips; how to set up the lap grinder; how to change wheels and clean them; and how to clean up the grinder at the end.

Please bring 1-3 fired projects to work on.

The lap grinder can be messy, especially the first time. Wear old clothes or an apron; and old closed toe shoes. I recommend you remove your rings, bracelets or watches; and tie back long hair.

This equipment training does not count toward the one-workshop-per-month.

In this class we will make an Iris flower design and attach it to a heart shaped wire form with an attached crystal.

The instructor will collect $2 for the ring and $1 for the crystal on the day of the class. The pattern will be provided.

General supplies to bring to class:

Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, mat and push pins for the pattern.
For the pattern two shades of glass are used for the iris plus a small amount of accent color. You will also need green for the leaves. The amount of glass needed is minimal. A good time to use scraps.
Writing Tools: Black Sharpies (fine and regular), Pen & Pencil
Other helpful items: A carrying box for projects, 60/40 solder, gel flux and brush, black patina and brush, wax.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED Workshop:

Intermediate: Able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

Join us in the classroom to make a colorful 6” pinwheel (using two colors) that can be used as a sun catcher.

This project is constructed by creating two layers of curved “swoop” shapes. The “swoops” will be cut from 3” wide strips of colored glass. Each layer uses approximately 13 “swoops”. The instructors will have swivel hangers available to buy for $1.25.

I really like the look of using all transparent, but you can use both transparent and/or opalescent.

You need to bring these materials for this workshop

* one 12”x3” strip & one 12”x6” strip of each color (transparent works best, but try to remember that the colors will overlap, so you want to have two colors that when overlapping will create a nice 3rd color)

* a thin black Sharpie

* a 12”x9” tile

* papyros cut to 8”x8”

General supplies to bring to class:

Beginner Level: This workshop is for those members who entered the Glass Club through Intro to Fusing or Intro to Stained Glass.

In this workshop you will learn the basic techniques for cutting mosaic glass pieces or tesserae and assembling your first mosaic project. You will create a colorful mosaic on flagstone while learning how to use many other substrates and materials in the process. There will be an assortment of patterns to choose from.

Glass and flagstone will be provided by the club. The club will also provide the tools to use in this workshop.

Member cost is $15.00.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL WORKSHOP: This workshop is for Intermediate and Advanced members: Intermediate: Able to design and create simple projects with minimal guidance; trained on all studio equipment. Fusers are learning about special firing programs.

In this workshop you will be constructing and designing a colorful platter or bowl using just clear scrap glass and different colors of frit (see picture).

This is a new technique that you may have seen some members designing in the studio. In preparation for this workshop you will need to decide in advance on the size, shape, and mold number for your project.

You must have the following supplies for this workshop:

* COE 96 clear glass cut to the size and shape of the mold you chose

* lots of COE clear scrap glass to build open spaces (that will be filled with medium frit)

* at least 3 colors, or more, of medium frit to fill in the open spaces (You'll need a fair amount of each color.)

* small spoon (to apply frit)

* small paintbrush (to move frit)

* cheap aerosol hair spray (such as Suave)

You will also need to bring the following general supplies listed below:

* Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, Nippers, Cutting Surface (Quilt-type mats work best)

In this class we will make an Iris flower design and attach it to a heart shaped wire form with an attached crystal.

The instructor will collect $2 for the ring and $1 for the crystal on the day of the class. The pattern will be provided.

General supplies to bring to class:

Glass cutting tools: Toyo Cutter, Running Pliers, Grozers, mat and push pins for the pattern.
For the pattern two shades of glass are used for the iris plus a small amount of accent color. You will also need green for the leaves. The amount of glass needed is minimal. A good time to use scraps.
Writing Tools: Black Sharpies (fine and regular), Pen & Pencil
Other helpful items: A carrying box for projects, 60/40 solder, gel flux and brush, black patina and brush, wax.

We will provide you with the pattern, glass, and supplies needed to complete the project. Tools will be available for those students who do not have their own. There will be a selection of glass available so you can choose your own colors for the project.

GVR Glass Art Club Annual Meeting

Come celebrate the end of the year at the Glass Artists Club Annual Meeting and social Saturday December 11, 2026 in the Anza Room at Santa Rita Springs GVR Center, right above our studio.

Please bring an appetizer or dessert of your choice if you want. Club provides water and coffee, anything else please BYOB.

We will have our annual reports with slides, results of the board of directors election, volunteer recognition, and door prizes throughout the afternoon of a collection of amazing items, including gifts from our generous friends at Southwest Art Glass.

Parking is available above and behind our complex with a bridge leading directly to the Anza Room upstairs.

We will be collecting non-perishable food for our local food banks to help our neighbors in need, dog and cat food is also needed. A collection bin is in lobby of our studio now and day of meeting we will have collection boxes available in the Anza Room.

Looking forward to seeing all our new and existing members to have fun and celebrate!
